A Whimsical Wanderlust: 48 Hours in Nantes, the City of Dukes

A Whimsical Wanderlust: 48 Hours in Nantes, the City of Dukes

Nantes, the city of Dukes, whispered promises of medieval grandeur and artistic intrigue. Intrigued, I embarked on a 48-hour adventure, eager to unravel its hidden gems and vibrant spirit. This isn't your typical tourist itinerary; it's a chronicle of my personal exploration, filled with unexpected delights, quirky encounters, and of course, delicious food. So, pack your walking shoes, a sense of curiosity, and get ready to discover Nantes through the eyes of a wandering soul.

♥️ Bonjour, Nantes! A Morning Steeped in History

The crisp morning air invigorated me as I stepped off the train. Nantes hummed with a gentle energy, a stark contrast to the bustling metropolises I was accustomed to. I opted for a charming Airbnb tucked away in the heart of the Graslin quarter, a stone's throw away from the iconic Château des Ducs de Bretagne.

Coffee and Croissants by the Castle: No French adventure is complete without a quintessential breakfast. I started my day at a quaint cafe facing the Château. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and buttery croissants filled the air, a symphony that awakened my senses. As I savored my breakfast, I admired the castle's imposing facade, its intricate carvings whispering tales of a bygone era.

♥️ A Journey Through Time: Exploring the Château des Ducs de Bretagne

Fortified with coffee and croissants, I ventured into the heart of history – the Château des Ducs de Bretagne. This magnificent fortress, once a residence of the Dukes of Brittany, transported me back in time. I wandered through grand halls adorned with tapestries, explored the armory filled with gleaming weapons, and climbed the ramparts for breathtaking views of the city. The château wasn't just a museum; it was a portal to Nantes' rich past.

An Afternoon Adventure: Unveiling Hidden Gems

By afternoon, the city beckoned with its hidden corners. Here are a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries that left me enchanted:

✨Passage Pommeraye: This stunning 19th-century arcade felt like stepping into a Parisian fantasy. Elegant boutiques lined the glass-roofed passage, while intricate mosaics and ironwork cast a whimsical charm. I wandered through, window shopping and soaking up the atmosphere.

✨The Plant Garden:Needing a respite from the urban buzz, I found solace in the Jardin des Plantes, a sprawling botanical garden. Meandering paths led me through vibrant flowerbeds, tranquil ponds, and greenhouses bursting with exotic flora. The gentle chirping of birds and the sweet scent of blooming flowers created a haven of peace amidst the city.

Island Machines: For a dose of quirky engineering genius, I headed to the Machines de l'Île. This whimsical theme park, built on a former shipyard, featured giant mechanical creatures that came to life with a steampunk flair. I marveled at a towering elephant spraying water from its trunk and rode a majestic carousel carrying fantastical creatures. It was a childlike delight for the grown-up me.

♥️ A Night of Gastronomic Delights and Cultural Immersion

As the sun began its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the city transformed into a vibrant hub of nightlife. Here's how I spent my delightful evenings:

✨A Culinary Adventure in Bouffay: Nantes' culinary scene is a tapestry of flavors. For dinner, I ventured into the Bouffay quarter, a maze of cobblestone streets lined with restaurants. I opted for a cozy creperie, where the friendly owner whipped up a savory galette with local cheese and vegetables. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, filled with animated conversations and the clinking of glasses.

✨Live Music on the Loire: After dinner, I strolled along the banks of the majestic Loire River. The gentle evening breeze carried the sounds of laughter and music from nearby bars and cafes. I stumbled upon a lively jazz bar with an outdoor terrace overlooking the water. The soulful melodies filled the night air, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

✨Secret Cinema Under the Stars: Nantes boasts a unique cultural scene. On a whim, I joined a group gathered in a hidden courtyard for a secret cinema experience. Under a blanket of stars, we huddled together watching a classic French film, the shared laughter and gasps creating a sense of community. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

♥️ Goodbye, Nantes! A City That Captivated My Heart

As I reluctantly boarded my train, Nantes shimmered in the distance, a kaleidoscope of memories etched in my mind. These 48 hours were a whirlwind of discovery, a testament to the city's ability to surprise and delight. Here are some final thoughts to take away:

✨Embrace the Unexpected: Nantes thrives on hidden gems and quirky encounters. Don't be afraid to wander off the beaten path and explore the lesser-known corners. You might just stumble upon a secret garden or a charming cafe that becomes your favorite spot.

✨Savor the Local Flavors: From buttery croissants to savory galettes, Nantes' culinary scene is a treasure trove. Indulge in fresh seafood, explore local markets, and try your hand at speaking a few French phrases. Food is a universal language, after all.

✨Slow Down and Appreciate: Nantes is a city best experienced at a leisurely pace. Skip the rushed tourist itinerary and allow yourself to get lost in the moment. Savor a leisurely coffee on a cafe terrace, people-watch in a bustling square, or simply wander along the riverbank and soak up the atmosphere.

Nantes isn't just a city; it's an experience. It's a place where history whispers from ancient castles, where whimsical machines come to life, and where the vibrant spirit of the locals is infectious. So, if you're seeking a city that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and quirky charm, then Nantes awaits you with open arms. Just pack your walking shoes, an adventurous spirit, and prepare to be captivated.

Saint Tropez: A Sun-Drenched Sojourn Beyond the Bling

Saint Tropez: A Sun-Drenched Sojourn Beyond the Bling

Introduction

Saint Tropez. The very name conjures images of mega-yachts, celebrities, and an air of exclusivity that borders on the intimidating. Having recently returned from a whirlwind trip there, I can tell you it's all that and a whole lot more. But fear not, fellow traveler, because Saint Tropez isn't just for the glitterati. With a little planning and an adventurous spirit, you too can unlock the magic of this iconic French Riviera town.

♥️ Hello, Sunshine!

My love affair with Saint Tropez began the moment I stepped off the plane in Nice and inhaled the crisp Mediterranean air. The drive along the winding coastal road was a feast for the eyes – turquoise waters lapping against dramatic cliffs, charming villages clinging to hillsides, and the promise of sunshine-filled days to come.

💓 Morning Rituals: Coffee, Croissants, and a Slice of Local Life

My mornings in Saint Tropez started with a simple yet oh-so-satisfying ritual. Forget fancy hotel buffets. I wandered down to the local boulangerie, still warm from the day's first baking. The aroma of fresh bread mingled with the scent of brewing coffee, and the sight of locals picking up their baguettes and pastries was pure joie de vivre. A pain au chocolat, a strong café au lait on a sun-drenched terrace – that's the perfect way to start a day in this seaside paradise.

⭐ Exploring Saint Tropez: Beyond the Beach

While Saint Tropez boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, there's more to the town than just sunbathing (although there's certainly nothing wrong with that!). Here are a few hidden gems I discovered:

✨The Old Town: Stroll through the labyrinthine streets of the historic center, a maze of ochre-colored houses, charming boutiques, and art galleries. Don't miss the Halle des Lices market, a vibrant display of local produce, fresh flowers, and Provençal crafts.

✨Musée de la Citadelle: This hilltop fortress offers stunning panoramic views of the town and the bay. The museum itself houses a collection of maritime artifacts and exhibits on the history of Saint Tropez.

✨Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption: This beautiful 18th-century church is a quiet haven in the heart of the bustling town. Step inside to admire the ornate Baroque architecture and the peaceful atmosphere.

💓 Lunchtime Delights: Harbor Views and Culinary Gems

After a morning of exploration, it was time to refuel. Saint Tropez offers a wide range of dining options, from Michelin-starred restaurants to casual beachside cafes. For a truly special experience, I recommend grabbing a table at a restaurant overlooking the harbor. Watching the yachts bob gently in the turquoise water while savoring fresh seafood and a glass of local rosé is pure bliss.

⭐Here are two of my lunchtime favorites:

✨Senequier: A Saint Tropez institution, Senequier is a waterfront cafe with a rich history. People-watch to your heart's content as you indulge in a delicious salade Niçoise or a plate of freshly shucked oysters.

✨La Ponche: This charming harborside restaurant offers a menu that changes seasonally, showcasing the freshest local ingredients. The view of the yachts and the relaxed atmosphere make it a perfect lunchtime escape.

💓Afternoon Adventures: Sailing, Shopping, or a Cultural Escape

⭐The afternoons in Saint Tropez offered a chance to indulge in different activities.

✨Set Sail: Chartering a boat is a fantastic way to experience the beauty of the coastline from a different perspective. Picture yourself swimming in hidden coves, sunbathing on secluded beaches, and exploring the dramatic rock formations that jut out from the turquoise water.

✨Shopping Spree: Saint Tropez is a haven for luxury shopping, with designer boutiques lining the main streets. But don't let the high-end stores intimidate you. There are also charming local shops selling everything from Provençal pottery to handmade jewelry.

✨Cultural Escape: If you need a break from the sunshine, head to the Musée de l'Annonciade, which houses a collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings by artists like Signac, Matisse, and Bonnard.

♥️Golden Evenings: Sunset Sips and Culinary Delights

As the sun began its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the magic of Saint Tropez truly unfolded. Here's how I spent my unforgettable evenings:

💓Sunset Rituals: Aperitifs and Breathtaking Views

French evenings are all about savoring the moment, and Saint Tropez takes this concept to a whole new level. Pre-dinner drinks, or "apéro" as the locals call it, are a cherished ritual. Picture yourself perched on a rooftop bar, sipping a refreshing Spritz or a glass of chilled rosé, as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the bay. The gentle sounds of music, the buzz of conversation, and the breathtaking panorama create an atmosphere that's both sophisticated and relaxed.

⭐Here are two of my favorite spots for sunset apéro:

✨Les Caves du Roy: This legendary beach club transforms into a chic bar in the evenings. Mingle with the beautiful people, soak up the stunning views of Pampelonne Beach, and enjoy live music as the sun sets.

✨L'Hôtel Rooftop: Perched atop the Hôtel Saint-André, this rooftop bar offers panoramic views of the town, the citadel, and the harbor. Settle into a plush armchair, sip on a signature cocktail, and watch the sky transform into a masterpiece of color.

♥️ Dinnertime Delights: From Michelin-Starred Splendor to Rustic Charm

💓 Saint Tropez caters to all palates when it comes to dinner. Here are two options I explored:

✨La Table du Chef Bruno: This Michelin-starred restaurant is a true culinary journey. Chef Bruno delivers innovative dishes that showcase the freshest seasonal ingredients, all presented with artistry and flair. Prepare to be dazzled by the taste and visual spectacle.

✨Villa Marie: For a more rustic yet equally delicious experience, head to Villa Marie. This charming restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner of the town offers traditional Provençal cuisine in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Think slow-cooked stews, fresh salads, and decadent desserts – perfect comfort food after a day of exploration.

💓Nightlife Nibbles: Late-Night Bites and Lively Bars

If you're looking to extend the evening and experience Saint Tropez's vibrant nightlife, there are plenty of options. Head to one of the trendy bars on the harbor for live music and dancing under the stars. For a more low-key experience, grab a table at a late-night cafe and people-watch with a glass of wine or a plate of charcuterie.

⭐Here are two places for a lively post-dinner experience:

✨Bar du Soleil: This buzzing bar is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Enjoy live music ranging from jazz to electronic, and soak up the energetic atmosphere.

✨L'Épi Plage: Located directly on Pampelonne Beach, this beach club transforms into a lively bar at night. Dance the night away under the stars, or simply relax with a drink and enjoy the cool sea breeze.

💫Farewell, Saint Tropez !

As I reluctantly boarded the plane to depart Saint Tropez, I carried with me a treasure trove of memories. This glamorous yet charming town had stolen a piece of my heart. Sure, it has its glitzy side, but beneath the surface lies a rich culture, stunning scenery, and a joie de vivre that's truly infectious. So, if you're looking for a vacation that blends luxury with authenticity, breathtaking beauty with cultural exploration, Saint Tropez awaits. Just remember, it's not just for the rich and famous; it's for anyone with a sense of adventure and a love for the finer things in life.

Toulouse: the clear lenses on those rose-tinted sunnies (slightly foggy, however).

Toulouse: the clear lenses on those rose-tinted sunnies (slightly foggy, however).

Introduction:

Toulouse, la Cité Rose, it is proudly called so. Honestly, after a night with the local violette liqueur, everything looks very pretty (or maybe lilacy?) to me. My magnetic pull towards this southern French city did not weaken for it kept me spellbound from the very start to the very end on a weekend that was whirlwind but nevertheless filled with many experiences of the bizarre, weird and also charming. Allow me to draw you a picture, if you insist, though the brushstrokes are likely to be a bit unsteady due to all the previous boozing.

♥️ Morning:

The start of mine, as all journeys do, was exercising a small cup of coffee. But not some plain coffee – oh, you could not go any more wrong. My journey took me to "Chez Emile," an asylum for the bohemian kindred spirits once housed in a factory turned into a sleep deprivation (not too worry, the only thing getting sacrificed now is the sleep schedule). There were beams of sunlight from the arched windows that illuminated the different furniture and also a motley population. My " café crème" came in a very dark and very powdery color with a touch of sweetness, accompanied by a croissant so flaky that it melted in your mouth with every bite. The fire lit and blinded, I took off on my investigation.

♥️ Afternoon:

Next target, Les Abattoirs. Hang on – let's wrap this up, before the vegan police call me out about that abandoned slaughter house (I mean abattoir, feeling sneaky here?) – this place is now a state-in- the-art art museum. Imagine giant inflatable works, video installations that make you question the fact and fiction, and also as much conceptual work as you can stand to get lost in that glorious labyrinth of the existential. Brace yourself to be challenged, made to laugh, and Perhaps even be severely traumatized (there was a taxidermied bear wearing a tutu).

By noon time, the city had transformed to a very lovely blend of, anyway, pink shade. Alright, I did what any self-respecting tourist would do, I suppose, I rented (although sporting a slight wobble in the wheels due to the addressed liqueur, which I must confess), and cycled along the Garonne River. The toss of a soft breeze whispered many secrets among the willow trees, and the river bank resounded with the laugh of many many happy families picnicking there. It was a minute of pure, undelivered tranquility, save for the times I almost wouldn't and have to dodge oncoming tippy-toe cyclists.

♥️ Night:

Night fell and there came the flaming minutes when the sun did not show up anymore behind the thousands terracotta-tiled roofs. Only at that moment, when the city was all lit up, the real magic of Toulouse started to become clear. Place du Capitole was transformed to act as the day of the street performers were the real artists and also the shopping mall. The fire whips that rotated like a whirlwind, performers would swing, then many would fly through the air; the accordion players' music, danced to the night, and the mimes, just (don't be the stuffed animal bear), stretched to the limit. The air was so suffused with the smell of the roasting chestnuts and the cheerful laughter, they, being enveloped by the locals and their unending glasses of wine, caused the whole place to spin out of control with their own sense of an unrestrained pleasure.

The dinner I vaguely remembered was the dirty white bean stew with the meat, sunlight softly tinted. And the night finished with a (maybe a bit of) sway (just like the work of an all-out strut) through the cobblestones and that final song, which I'm sure was (considering the faint echo of a lone guitarist) very lovely.

⭐Where to Eat & Go:

Both agents and the customers will benefit from the transparency since it promotes fairness and builds the trust in the company as it does not conceal any important information to either of the parties involved in the transaction.

✨Morning: Chez Emile (ecoffee and pastries in a very quirky setting)

✨Afternoon: Eaux Vives (contemporary art museum, be prepared for a real challenge)

✨Evening: Place du Capitole, the famous street where the street performers show their own talent and there is a nice and vibrant atmosphere to enjoy.

✨Food: L'Entrepot (cassoulet and also duck confit, the classic French dishes served in a contemporary restaurant setting).

✨Drinks: Librarian (wine bar with a very literary atmosphere), Les Halles Victor Hugo (street food & drinks), Les Nuées d’Arxy (art gallery).

💫Think gladly that this is my version of the world and you will see that Toulouse is indeed an exciting and also a mysterious place. Therefore, get yourself (the non-alcoholic drink) of your own choice, wear your (rose-tinted) glasses , and let the beautiful, unique city of the Pink City to write its own story over your very soul. Just be aware the fuzziness is a very normal.
